Studies of Ancient Structures at Petra and Be'er Sheva

Frederic Edwin Church's field sketches document architectural ruins encountered during his travels in the Near East. These rapid notational drawings—executed in pen on paper—capture monumental tombs carved into rock faces at Petra, a well structure, and various vessels and details observed at the sites. Church's economical line work establishes form through hatching and spatial recession, recording both overall compositions and discrete archaeological elements. Such sketches served as reference material for the painter's studio compositions, allowing him to preserve topographical specificity while composing landscapes for exhibition.
