Buildings and Figures at as-Samu, Palestine

Frederic Edwin Church's sketch documents architectural ruins and daily life in the Palestinian village of as-Samu during the artist's travels through the Middle East. Church, a leading Hudson River School painter, filled his notebooks with such studies—rapid pen-and-ink notations capturing stone structures, arches, and local inhabitants. These working drawings served as source material for his monumental studio paintings. The informal line work, varied perspective studies, and annotations reveal the artist's empirical approach: studying light, form, and composition before rendering finished works.
