Frederic Edwin Church's luminous sketch captures the Holy City bathed in nocturnal light. Rendered in pencil and charcoal on paper, the composition emphasizes atmospheric effects—a hallmark of Church's Hudson River School practice. The distant cityscape with its characteristic domes and spires sits elevated in a vast landscape of cultivated fields and scattered structures. Church toured the Middle East and Holy Land in 1867–68, producing sketches that informed his monumental finished paintings.
