Mt. Hor, Jordan

Frederic Edwin Church, American, 1826–1900 · 1868

Mt. Hor, Jordan
Frederic Edwin Church's sketch of Mount Hor depicts the biblical landmark in the Jordanian landscape with the artist's characteristic attention to geological formation and atmospheric effect. Church traveled throughout the Middle East and South America to gather material for his monumental paintings, treating these field studies as independent works of art. The rapid pen lines capture the mountain's stratified structure, while the foreground caravan—rendered in swift, economical strokes—establishes scale and human presence within the vast terrain. Church's drawings were foundational to nineteenth-century landscape practice, transforming topographic record into imaginative composition.
