Bedouin Tents with Figures, Palestine

This sketch by Hudson River School painter Frederic Edwin Church documents figures and tent structures observed during his 1868 travels to the Middle East. Church's rapid pen studies capture the volumetric folds of canvas shelters and the postures of standing figures in gestural shorthand. Annotations in the margin—"Bedouin tents of Black Goats hair" and what appears to be notes on fabric texture—reveal the artist's practice of recording visual and material details for later studio reference. Such travel sketches, accumulating across Church's expeditions to South America and the Eastern Mediterranean, became source material for his monumental landscape paintings and reflected nineteenth-century American artistic fascination with exotic geography and light.
