Al-Khazneh, Petra

Frederic Edwin Church's oil study depicts the carved Nabataean temple at Petra, Jordan, rendered in the luminous tonalities characteristic of Hudson River School painting. Church visited the Near East in 1867–68, sketching monuments and landscapes that would inform his later monumental canvases. Here, the architectural facade glows against shadowed sandstone cliffs, its neoclassical portico—with sculptural tympanum and columned portico—framed by the raw geology that frames it.
