Crouching Dromedary

Frederic Edwin Church, American, 1826–1900 · 1868

Crouching Dromedary
Frederic Edwin Church's study of a resting camel demonstrates the Hudson River School painter's meticulous approach to natural subjects. Though Church is known primarily for monumental landscape compositions, this detailed watercolor reveals his practice of sketching animal anatomy and exotic fauna encountered through travel. The camel, laden with supplies and secured by chain, sits in three-quarter profile against a spare background—a working study rather than a finished composition. Church's precise rendering of texture, posture, and material properties—from the animal's coarse fur to the worn leather gear—exemplifies the observational rigor underlying his larger works. This sheet exemplifies nineteenth-century academic practice: artists built compositions from accumulated studies of individual forms.
