St. Gilgen by the Wolfgangsee, Austria

Frederic Edwin Church, the leading American landscape painter of the nineteenth century, traveled extensively throughout Europe and the Americas in search of dramatic natural subjects. This sketch captures the Alpine village of St. Gilgen on Austria's Wolfgangsee during Church's 1868 European tour.
