Architectural Sketches, Mexico

Frederic Edwin Church's rapid architectural studies capture Mexican colonial buildings with economical pen work. The sheet presents three separate views: a distant cathedral complex with prominent spire, a fortified tower or defensive structure labeled "in Cemetery," and a detailed study of a domed roof with barrel-tile construction. Church's approach—quick linear notation over gestural massing—reflects the nineteenth-century artist's practice of gathering visual information during travels. These sketches served as source material for the Hudson River School painter's compositions, allowing him to study regional building traditions and their relationship to landscape before translating them into finished works.
