In the Woods, Jamaica

Frederic Edwin Church's oil study captures a dense tropical forest in Jamaica with characteristic luminosity. Towering palms and tangled vegetation recede into atmospheric depth, their trunks rendered in bold dark strokes against warm earth tones and touches of green foliage. Church, a leading Hudson River School painter, traveled extensively throughout the Americas to document landscapes firsthand.
