Wildflowers

Frederic Edwin Church, American, 1826–1900 · 1865

Wildflowers
Frederic Edwin Church's study of wildflowers demonstrates the Hudson River School's meticulous attention to botanical detail. This oil on paper captures a dense arrangement of flowering plants and grasses rendered with Church's characteristic precision. The composition arranges specimens—including lupines, salvias, and dahlias—against a textured golden background, creating both scientific documentation and aesthetic arrangement. Church combined his role as landscape painter with that of naturalist, studying flora with the same care he applied to monumental views of Niagara Falls and tropical valleys. Such botanical studies served as preparatory material and independent works exploring the intersection of art, nature, and scientific observation.
