Study of Moon and Clouds
Frederic Edwin Church, American, 1826–1900 · 1868

Frederic Edwin Church's atmospheric sketch captures luminous clouds illuminated by moonlight over Terni, Italy. Executed in pencil with gestural hatching, the study demonstrates Church's attention to ephemeral natural phenomena and light effects. The artist traveled extensively throughout Europe and South America, recording landscape studies that informed his monumental exhibition paintings. These working sketches—rapidly executed and annotated with observations—reveal the technical process behind Church's celebrated romantic landscapes and his method of translating observed nature into finished compositions for the American public.
