Frederic Edwin Church, American landscape painter (1826–1900), rendered this mountainous Jamaican vista in oil on paper. The work exemplifies Church's method of sketching from nature during his travels throughout the Americas. Layered greens and browns describe dense forest canopy descending into misty valleys, while pale sky breaks through cloud cover above distant peaks.
