Sketches of Chimborazo, Ecuador

Frederic Edwin Church, American, 1826–1900 · 1857

Sketches of Chimborazo, Ecuador
Frederic Edwin Church's study sheets document his investigation of Ecuador's volcanic landscape, rendered in oil on paper. The artist composed multiple views of Chimborazo from different vantage points and atmospheric conditions, exploring how light and weather transform the mountain's form. Church's compositional sketches—with their varied framings and tonal studies—exemplify nineteenth-century landscape practice: artists worked from nature to gather visual data, then synthesized these observations into finished exhibition paintings. The dominant ochre ground anchors volumetric studies of peaks and slopes, while smaller panels test effects of cloud cover and distant perspectives. Such working methods were fundamental to Hudson River School practice and American Romantic painting.
