Mountainous Landscape with a Waterfall, near Tuquerres, Colombia
Frederic Edwin Church's pencil sketch captures a dramatic Andean vista with a distant waterfall nestled among towering peaks. Church traveled extensively through South America in the early 1850s, sketching landscapes that would later inform his monumental finished paintings. This study demonstrates the artist's keen eye for topography and atmospheric effects—the careful linear rendering of ridge lines and the subtle wash of tone suggesting cloud and mist. Such on-site drawings were essential to Church's working method, translating direct observation into the grand romantic compositions that made him America's preeminent landscape painter of the mid-nineteenth century.
