Sketches on the Road from Al-Masmiyah to Deir Ali, Syria

Frederic Edwin Church, the preeminent American landscape painter of the nineteenth century, traveled to Syria in 1868 to gather material for his monumental paintings. These working sketches—a distant city skyline, geological strata studies, and figure studies—document his observational method. Church sketched rapidly on site, recording architectural forms, layered rock formations, and local figures in simplified line work. Such travel drawings served as visual notes, later synthesized into his large-scale studio compositions.
