Moonlight over the Bernese Alps, Belalp, Switzerland

Frederic Edwin Church, American, 1826–1900 · 1868

Moonlight over the Bernese Alps, Belalp, Switzerland
Frederic Edwin Church's study captures Alpine moonlight through layered atmospheric effects. Diagonal hatching in graphite establishes shadow and terrain, while white heightening suggests luminescence breaking through cloud cover. The composition demonstrates Church's method of on-site notation—rapid notation of light conditions and topography that would inform larger finished works. Church's expeditions across North America and Europe generated thousands of such sketches, establishing the visual vocabulary of romantic landscape painting in the nineteenth century.
