Hilltops with Boulders, Palestine or Syria

Frederic Edwin Church's sketch studies rocky Middle Eastern landscapes with quick pen strokes and watercolor washes. The five compositional variations explore different arrangements of boulders and stone formations across arid terrain, characteristic of Church's working method during his travels.
