Hilltops with Boulders, Palestine or Syria

Frederic Edwin Church, American, 1826–1900 · circa 1868

Hilltops with Boulders, Palestine or Syria
Frederic Edwin Church's sketch studies rocky Middle Eastern landscapes with quick pen strokes and watercolor washes. The five compositional variations explore different arrangements of boulders and stone formations across arid terrain, characteristic of Church's working method during his travels. These studies demonstrate how nineteenth-century landscape painters developed monumental oil paintings from field sketches, testing viewpoints and geological details. Church's interest in Eastern geography reflected broader American fascination with biblical lands and orientalist subjects that dominated Hudson River School painting and popular illustration of the period.
