A View of the Volcano Cotopaxi from the Hacienda San Antonio, Ecuador

Frederic Edwin Church's sketch documents Cotopaxi, one of the world's highest active volcanoes, rendered with the precise observation that defined Hudson River School landscape painting. Church traveled through South America in 1853, sketching volcanic peaks and tropical terrain that would inform his monumental canvases. This study combines topographic accuracy—the cone's snow cap, the surrounding ridged slopes—with atmospheric notation of the volcano's gas plume.
