Landscape Sketch, Jamaica

Frederic Edwin Church, the preeminent American landscape painter of the nineteenth century, executed this rapid pencil study during his travels through Jamaica. Church's sketches from his Caribbean expeditions served as visual notes for the monumental oil paintings he would develop in his studio. Working in the tradition of the Hudson River School, Church combined meticulous observation of tropical vegetation and atmospheric effects with Romantic sensibilities.
