Cloud Sketch, Hudson, New York

Frederic Edwin Church, the preeminent American landscape painter of the nineteenth century, executed this rapid pencil study of atmospheric conditions above the Hudson River Valley near his home. The sketch demonstrates Church's lifelong attention to meteorological effects and light—concerns central to the Hudson River School movement. Working quickly to capture transient cloud formations, Church layered gestural marks to suggest volume, density, and the play of light across the sky.
