Designs for Cartouches

These engraved ornamental designs by French Rococo architect Gilles-Marie Oppenord demonstrate the decorative vocabulary of early 18th-century design. Each cartouche—a framed ornamental panel—features scrollwork, shells, foliage, and figural elements (putti, horses, sphinxes) arranged asymmetrically around blank central fields. Cartouches served practical purposes as frames for inscriptions, coats of arms, or text on buildings, furniture, and printed materials.
