Ornamental Andiron Designs

Ornamental Andiron Designs
French designer Gilles-Marie Oppenord presents three decorative andiron variations in this engraving. The left design features a vase-form finial above scrolled supports with a cartouche panel. The right andiron rises taller, crowned with an ornamental urn and adorned with a mask-form medallion and foliate swags. A decorative frieze study appears at top. These designs exemplify Regency ornamental vocabulary—symmetrical scrollwork, mythological references, and classical urns—establishing patterns that dominated European interior metalwork throughout the eighteenth century. Such engravings circulated among metalworkers and architects as pattern sources for domestic hearth furnishings.
