Design for a Cartouche

This ornamental design by French architect and designer Gilles-Marie Oppenord exemplifies the Rococo style's exuberant approach to architectural framing. Two winged putti flank an arched niche, their bodies and drapery dissolving into flowing acanthus leaves and scrollwork. The cartouche—an ornamental tablet or shield—served as a functional frame for inscriptions or coats of arms in Baroque and Rococo interiors.
