Designs for Cartouches

These two engraved designs by French ornamental artist Gilles-Marie Oppenord demonstrate the cartouche—a framing device that became fundamental to graphic design. The left panel employs figural ornamentation with putti and scrollwork surrounding an empty shield; the right features architectural elements and decorative flourishes. Cartouches served as borders for text, heraldry, and illustrations in prints, manuscripts, and later in commercial design. Oppenord's inventive compositions—mixing classical motifs with baroque curves—influenced decorative arts across Europe and established visual conventions for containing and presenting information that would shape how designers organized space for centuries.
