Design for a Cartouche

Gilles-Marie Oppenord, French, 1672–1742 · Early 18th century

Design for a Cartouche
This ornamental design by French architect and decorator Gilles-Marie Oppenord exemplifies the Rococo style's decorative vocabulary. The cartouche—a framed ornament used in architecture and design—features a central vase flanked by putti (cherubs), crowned with scrollwork and a shell motif. Acanthus leaves and a satyr mask at the base complete the composition. Such designs were essential pattern books for craftsmen and artisans, circulated as prints to influence furniture makers, sculptors, and builders across Europe. Oppenord's work helped establish the elaborate, asymmetrical aesthetic that defined early eighteenth-century French design.
