Three Armchair Designs

This engraved plate presents three variations of mid-nineteenth-century French furniture design, each featuring the ornamental vocabulary of the period: scrolled arms, tapered legs, and elaborately patterned upholstery. The left chair, marked "Aubert 1268," and the rightmost example signed "Poignguet Jr.," demonstrate the Neo-Rococo aesthetic that dominated elite domestic interiors during the Second Empire. The precision of the engraving technique allowed such designs to circulate widely among furniture makers and patrons, standardizing fashionable forms across European workshops. These technical drawings functioned as both commercial samples and style guides, essential to the furniture trade's visual culture.
