Study of Palm Trees

Francis Hopkinson Smith (1838–1915) was an American engineer, writer, and artist known for his watercolor landscapes and travel sketches. This study demonstrates his observational approach to natural subjects, capturing a towering palm tree dominating a riverside landscape with smaller vegetation and distant architecture. Smith's watercolor technique—layered washes of greens and browns with selective detail—was characteristic of late-nineteenth-century landscape painting.
