Pool in the Woods

Francis Hopkinson Smith's watercolor depicts a forest stream with fallen logs, moss-covered rocks, and filtered light through tall trees. Smith (1838–1915) was an American artist, engineer, and author known for landscape paintings and illustrations. This study of natural light and woodland atmosphere reflects the nineteenth-century tradition of plein-air practice and romantic landscape painting. Though not a comic strip, such detailed genre scenes informed the visual storytelling techniques emerging in newspaper illustration—the careful composition, attention to spatial depth, and narrative suggestion of a moment in time that would later characterize the visual vocabulary of sequential art.
