Christopher Columbus Playing Card
Eugène Moreau, French, active 19th c. · 1871

This hand-colored engraving depicts Christopher Columbus as part of a French "Cartes héroïques" (Heroic Cards) series celebrating great historical figures. The card employs the standard playing card format with a club suit symbol in the upper left corner. Columbus stands in period dress—blue tunic, red cap, brown hose—holding a navigational globe, the primary iconographic reference to his voyages. The decorative border and gold leaf detailing reflect the luxury production standards of mid-nineteenth-century French card manufacturing. Such commemorative playing cards served both recreational and educational purposes, popularizing historical narratives through domestic objects. The series exemplifies how illustrated cards functioned as accessible vehicles for historical storytelling during the nineteenth century, predating but paralleling the visual narrative conventions that would later define modern sequential art.
