Napoléon Bonaparte Playing Card
Eugène Moreau, French, active 19th c. · 1871

This hand-colored engraving depicts Napoleon Bonaparte as the Hearts suit in a French deck of "Cartes héroïques" (Heroic Cards), a 19th-century tradition of replacing standard playing card figures with celebrated historical and military figures. The card identifies its subject with dates (1769–1821) and presents him in characteristic dress—blue coat, white breeches, boots, and sword—within a castle-rampart border. Such decorative decks served both as games and as popular teaching tools, circulating portraits of notable men among French households. Artist Eugène Moreau's hand-colored technique, with its precise engraving lines and period costume detail, exemplifies the commercial graphic production that made historical imagery accessible to ordinary citizens during the Third Republic.
