Great Artists Playing Card

This French playing card from a series titled *Cartes héroïques* or *Des grands hommes* (Heroic Cards / Of Great Men) features nine portrait medallions of celebrated artists arranged symmetrically around a spade suit marker. The subjects—including Rembrandt, Raphael, Murillo, Poussin, Rubens, Mozart, Gluck, David d'Angers, and Michel-Ange—represent canonical figures from European art history spanning the Renaissance through the 18th century. Engraved by Eugène Moreau, the card employs classical framing devices: laurel wreaths in gold leaf flank the composition, while a radiating sunburst crowns the arrangement. Each portrait is labeled with the artist's name and birth or death year.
