Study for Herding

This ink sketch served as preparatory work for Kenyon Cox's monumental mural cycle *The Progress of Civilization* at the Iowa State Capitol. Cox, a leading American muralist and academic painter, developed compositions through detailed studies before executing large-scale works. The drawing captures a herder with cattle, one segment in Cox's grand historical narrative tracing human development from hunting through agriculture.
