A Landscape

Eugène Edouard Soulès, a French artist of the nineteenth century, rendered this expansive landscape in graphite and ink. The composition employs atmospheric perspective—distant hills and sky rendered in lighter tones recede toward the horizon, while foreground vegetation, particularly the tall trees at right, anchors the viewer's position. Rolling terrain, scattered buildings, and groves of poplars define the cultivated European countryside. Soulès worked during the mid-Victorian period when landscape drawing served both as fine art and as preparatory study for larger compositions. The careful tonal modeling and linear precision reflect academic training in the French tradition.
