Design for a Bookplate: Colonial Dames of America
Mrs. John King Van Rensselaer, American, 1848–1925 · 1894

This ornamental bookplate design by Mrs. John King Van Rensselaer exemplifies late-nineteenth-century decorative arts. The composition features an elaborate folding fan as its central motif, a fashionable accessory that also served as a canvas for artistic expression. Intricate vignettes populate the fan's surface, depicting colonial-era scenes and figures. Below, scrolling ribbons frame the inscription "Libris Colonial Dames of America," identifying the owner and organization. The work demonstrates the period's revival of colonial imagery and the formal typography characteristic of bookplate design—small identifying marks that owners affixed to book covers to denote possession and personal taste.
