Edouard de Beaumont's fashion illustration captures the silhouette of 1880s high society. The woman wears the era's distinctive puffed-sleeve dress and elaborately decorated hat, rendered in watercolor and ink with careful attention to fabric texture and drape. Though predating the comic strip form, such illustrated figure studies in newspapers and magazines of the late nineteenth century established the visual conventions—figure delineation, expressive line work, and sequential visual narrative—that would become fundamental to comics.
