Four Sketches of a Young Woman

This study sheet demonstrates the sequential figure work that preceded modern comic art. Four poses show a young woman holding an open book or newspaper, rendered in pen with cross-hatching for volume and shadow. The varying scales and positions—seated, standing, in profile and frontal views—suggest character studies for illustration work. This type of preparatory drawing was common among newspaper illustrators of the period, who developed visual shorthand for depicting recurring characters and expressions across multiple panels. Such studies established conventions for pose variation and gestural clarity that would become foundational to comic strip art.
