The Virgin With the Child

Fortunato Duranti, Italian · circa 1850

The Virgin With the Child
This Italian drawing by Fortunato Duranti depicts a religious subject—the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child attended by angels—rendered in the neoclassical academic style of mid-nineteenth-century art. The composition uses wash and ink to create soft modeling of forms, with the Virgin's draped garments and the luminous bodies of the cherubs dominating the composition. The work reflects the formal training and classical ideals that defined European fine art before photography and modernism reshaped visual culture. Though predating the newspaper comic strip era, such drawings established foundational techniques—the use of light and shadow, compositional balance, and narrative clarity—that would later influence how artists organized visual information across sequential panels.
