Figures Mourning Over the Dead Christ

Fortunato Duranti's pen-and-wash composition depicts the Lamentation of Christ, a subject central to Christian devotional art. The artist arranges multiple figures around the prone body of Christ in a densely populated scene typical of nineteenth-century history painting. Duranti employs fluid linework with warm ochre washes to model form and create spatial recession. The kneeling, standing, and gesturing figures express grief through exaggerated postures and animated poses. This study demonstrates the artist's engagement with Italian religious tradition and Baroque compositional strategies, rendered in the rapid, gestural technique favored by academic preparatory drawings of the era.
