Study of Figures in Classical Setting
This pen-and-wash drawing by Italian artist Fortunato Duranti demonstrates the academic study of human anatomy and mythological composition characteristic of mid-nineteenth-century European art training. The sketch depicts multiple nude and draped figures arranged in an interior space, employing classical compositional principles. Through loose, gestural linework and tonal washes, Duranti captures movement and spatial relationships. Such studies formed the foundation of formal artistic practice, with artists working from live models and classical precedents to master figure drawing before undertaking larger historical or allegorical works. The work reflects the enduring influence of Renaissance and Baroque traditions on academic instruction across Europe.
