Cypress Trees, Chapultepec, Mexico
Samuel Colman, American, 1832–1920 · 1892

Samuel Colman's watercolor study captures the ancient ahuehuete cypress trees of Chapultepec Park near Mexico City. Rendered with atmospheric perspective, the composition emphasizes the massive, gnarled trunks and spreading canopies that characterize these centuries-old specimens. Colman, a prominent American landscape painter and founding member of the American Water Color Society, traveled extensively throughout the Americas documenting natural subjects. This work exemplifies the nineteenth-century tradition of plein-air sketching and the artist's interest in recording distinctive botanical and geographical features across diverse regions.
