Leaf Studies
Samuel Colman, American, 1832–1920 · 1880

Samuel Colman's botanical study sheet demonstrates the naturalist's approach to understanding plant structure through careful observation. On the left, a compound leaf unfolds with methodical precision, its segmented leaflets rendered to reveal the vein patterns and spatial arrangement that define the specimen. On the right, a delicate flowering plant branches upward, its small clustered blossoms and developing seed pods captured in various stages of growth. Colman's technique—precise line work with selective shading—served both scientific documentation and artistic training, reflecting the nineteenth-century practice of combining botanical illustration with studio draftsmanship.
