Viewing of the Cherry Blossoms

Ando Hiroshige, Japanese, 1797–1858 · 1858

Viewing of the Cherry Blossoms
Ando Hiroshige's woodblock print depicts a seasonal leisure scene along the water, with figures gathered beneath flowering trees while boats navigate offshore. The composition uses Hiroshige's characteristic palette of Prussian blue and soft pinks to structure the landscape into distinct spatial planes—foreground figures, middle-ground settlement, and distant water with vessels. Multiple vantage points and the bird's-eye perspective are typical of ukiyo-e landscape tradition. Cherry blossom viewing (hanami) was a popular subject in 19th-century Japanese prints, capturing moments of community gathering and seasonal observation that reflected the urban and rural leisure culture of the Edo and early Meiji periods.
