A Street Scene of Edo

Ando Hiroshige, Japanese, 1797–1858 · 1858

A Street Scene of Edo
This woodblock print by Ando Hiroshige depicts a bustling street in Edo-period Japan, rendered in the ukiyo-e tradition. The composition employs linear perspective to draw the viewer's eye down a wide avenue flanked by merchant houses and administrative buildings with distinctive tile roofs. Figures populate the scene in varied poses and dress—some walking, conversing, or conducting business—rendered in simplified forms and flat color planes. Hiroshige's sequential use of architectural elements and natural features (trees, water) creates a narrative progression through space, anticipating graphic conventions later adopted in printed comics. The print demonstrates how Japanese printmakers developed compositional strategies for depicting crowded, dynamic urban life that would influence Western illustration and sequential art.
