Cherry Blossom Viewing
Ando Hiroshige, Japanese, 1797–1858 · 1858

Ando Hiroshige's woodblock print depicts a spring festival scene at a temple or shrine, with visitors gathering beneath blooming cherry trees. Figures in blue robes populate the grounds, while red temple buildings nestle among tall pines and flowering branches rendered in soft pink. The composition employs Hiroshige's characteristic perspective—a flattened, elevated view with the turquoise foreground acting as a stage. This print exemplifies the ukiyo-e tradition of landscape and seasonal subjects that dominated Japanese printmaking in the mid-nineteenth century, the final work by Hiroshige before his death in 1858.
