Okitsu from the series 53 Stations of the Tokaido
Ando Hiroshige, Japanese, 1797–1858 · 1855

Ando Hiroshige's woodblock print depicts the station town of Okitsu along Japan's famous Tokaido road. The composition layers landscape elements—forested hills, a river crossing, rocky outcrops—with genre scenes of travelers and merchants conducting daily business. Hiroshige employs the Ukiyo-e tradition's refined perspective and color registers: deep blues for water, yellows and creams for stone formations, greens for vegetation. The work belongs to his renowned series documenting the fifty-three stations connecting Edo and Kyoto, a project that established the travel landscape as a major print genre and influenced later developments in Japanese visual narrative.
