Arai from the series 53 Stations of the Tokaido

Utagawa Hiroshige's final major series depicts stations along Japan's principal trade route between Edo and Kyoto. This print shows Arai station with Mount Fuji visible across the bay, anchoring the composition in the distance. Hiroshige employs the woodblock artist's characteristic perspective—elevated viewpoint, flattened spatial planes, and bold color gradations in sky and water. Small boats with distinctive sails dot the harbor below while the foreground features the fortified station building nestled among pine groves. The red cartouches bearing Japanese characters serve as both title and decorative framing element. Completed near the artist's death, the series represents the culmination of his landscape innovations and influenced Western artists decades later.
