Ando Hiroshige's final major work depicts a rest station along Japan's famous Tokaido road. The composition frames travelers beneath ancient pines, their yellow palanquins and striped awnings creating bright focal points against the landscape's receding blue waters and green slopes. Hiroshige's signature perspective—combining elevated viewpoint with carefully balanced negative space—established visual conventions that influenced Western printmaking and, decades later, early comic art.
