Processional

Ando Hiroshige, Japanese, 1797–1858 · 1858

Processional
Ando Hiroshige's woodblock print depicts a festival procession along a riverbank lined with tall conifers. In the foreground, six figures in period dress carry red banners and parasols across sandy ground scattered with river stones. A dense forest occupies the middle distance, with mountains and twilight sky beyond. Hiroshige employs the Ukie perspective technique to create spatial recession, using graduated color—from pale blue sky to deeper greens to foreground detail—to suggest atmospheric distance. The composition balances human activity against landscape grandeur, a hallmark of his late work. Created in Japan's Edo period, this print represents the sophisticated color-printing technology and compositional innovation that would later influence Western printmakers and painters.
