Ando Hiroshige, Japanese, 1797–1858 · 1858

Ocean View
Ando Hiroshige's late work depicts a coastal landscape with Mount Fuji rising beyond sheltered waters. A temple with red-trimmed eaves occupies the foreground left, where travelers gather on a path lined with blooming trees. Fishing boats dot the bay while lanterns float on the water. The composition employs Hiroshige's characteristic perspective—elevated viewpoint, layered depth, subtle color gradations from deep blue water to pale sky—techniques central to the ukiyo-e tradition. Created during the final year of the artist's life, this print exemplifies the landscape woodblock prints that influenced Western artists and shaped the visual vocabulary of spatial representation in modern media.
